At Genevieve Oldfield Physiotherapy, I look to work in a way that treats you as a whole and not just an injured body part or painful area. I have a special interest in pain management and, therefore, work with clients with both acute and chronic pain. I believe that an effective approach integrates rehabilitation and pain management to improve your quality of life and function.
“Pain has been defined as an unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.” – IASP
The aim is to restore you to a quality of life that is driven by your own goals. I strive to create a holistic, patient-centered, healing and restorative approach that uses evidence-based and integrative knowledge and skills to empower you to achieve what is most important to you. This means that your experience is specific to you and there is no “recipe treatment”. We are a team working out a treatment program best suited to your needs, whether that be running a marathon or being able to sit through dinner.
I believe referral to appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team is an integral part of a treatment program and ensures you are guaranteed to receive the most appropriate treatment.
Genevieve is passionate about physiotherapy and its role in improving clients’ quality of life after her life was changed by a physiotherapist at 6 years old. Her aim is to impact at least one other person in a similar way.
She developed a love for the human body and all it can do as a South African gymnast and vaulting champion as a young girl. She understands what it means to be injured and have pain that affects quality of life and overall well-being from her own personal experience. She understands healing needs to take place by being treated as a whole and not just as an injured body.
Genevieve graduated cum laude from the University of Cape Town with B.Sc (Physiotherapy) in 2011.
She completed her community service year in rural Transkei at Canzibe Hospital.
On returning to Cape Town, she worked at Vincent Pallotti Hospital for 4 years before moving across to an outpatient practice in Vredehoek.
It was here that she discovered her love for a holistic treatment approach and how this approach is relevant to anyone in pain, from endurance athletes to older and less active clients.
She has completed her dry needling courses (1 & 2), is an APPi-trained pilates instructor (mat work 1, 2 & 3), and is in the process of specializing in pain management (currently completing her TrainPain Pain Certificate, with the intention to complete her PiDip Masters and PhD within the next few years). She keeps up to date with relevant courses and strives to give the latest research-driven and evidence-based treatment to her clients.
She now enjoys running, long-distance marathons (road and trail), yoga, hiking, and surfing. She has a special interest in mindfulness and meditation, having completed many courses in this field from the age of 12.
